The story of the decoding of Cretan Linear B. I knew fragments about it already, but I’d never read the complete story. There’s enough information and the linguistic and cryptographic aspects to be technically interesting, but it maintains a strong narrative and isn’t just a reference book.

It’s split into three parts, each focusing on person who was involved in the decipherment, but it feels like there’s a strong emphasis on Alice Kober. A woman whose contributions were largely overlooked in favour of her male peers. Shocking, I know.

The spiritual successor to A Series of Unfortunate Events, although narratively speaking it’s a prequel. It follows the adventures of a young Snicket in the town of Stain’d-By-The-Sea.

It feels a bit lighter than the originals, possibly deliberately so – seems like there’s a bit less depth in the story than the Baudelaire books – but it still retains the charm of the originals, and I consumed it in a single sitting. I care enough to read the sequel at some point, which is probably a good thing.

The final book of *All the Wrong Questions*, and it concludes the series as I’ve come to expect from Snicket.

This book only covers a single night, as Snicket leaves the town aboard its train. I found this made the book much tighter and better-paced than some previous editions, where the timing could get a bit wooly. I enjoyed the plot, and consumed it in a single sitting – but I guessed most of the major “reveals” before they hit the page. Most other Snicket books have at least one or two surprising moments, and I didn’t get that from this one.

The story ties off in typical Snicket fashion, a phrase which here means “not actually resolving very much and leaving you with more questions than answers”, but I like the tone of melancholy and uncertainty it leaves. A solid addition to the Snicket canon.

I read this for a book club. My response is basically “Meh”.

The book feels like it’s trying to be cleverer than it actually is – there are some interesting ideas waiting to come out, but they’re not properly explored. The book is split into three streams of narrative, so each character only gets ~100 pages to develop. That’s not much time – especially as the characters all seem weirdly unlikable and detached – it would have been more compelling if I could get behind the characters, or they felt more like they had real emotional attachments.

The three streams are supposed to conclude in a “twist”, but that was confusing. The first chapter spoils the ending of one stream, for no apparent reason, and the rest was both clumsily signposted and hard to follow. I knew most of the ending well before we got there, but not the details. (Nor did the other five people at the book club.) Quite a few strands are left dangling.

I finished it, but I wouldn’t read it again.

Fire spotters are a rare breed, and becoming rarer still. I’ve always found the idea appealing (even if I’m not sure I’d enjoy it in practice) – I suspect that’s why I enjoyed the book so much.

I expected to hear about the experience of being a fire lookout – the solitude, the wilderness, the loneliness – and on that, the book delivers. It’s really an account of a single year in the tower: five months spent in the Gila wilderness, with nothing but his dog for company. But the author also interleaves a lot of history and background on fire towers and the US Forest Service, which provides both interesting facts and useful context for the narrative. It also doesn’t pull its punches – the book is critical of some of the Forest Service decisions, and makes clear the strain it puts on his relationships.

There are definitely some rough edges, but overall I enjoyed the read.

review:
  date_read: '2017-04-01'
---

The book is told as a series of short stories about different patients – what happened when they came for their consultations, the “aha” moment when Grosz worked out the underlying issue, and some discussion of how the themes of the patient’s problems might be more widely applicable.

I found it intriguing. That’s a good word. Each story is short, and we only get a brief glimpse into each of their lives. Each one feels fresh and compelling, and I found myself wanting to read ‘just one more’ – all the way to the end of the book. Many of the stories were relatable, whether to me personally or to somebody I knew, and reading how the author dealt with the patients was helpful.

Not everything has a resolution – but I think that’s a good thing. If everything wrapped up neatly in a bow, it would feel less real.

It does feel a bit voyeuristic, peering into these people’s lives for a tiny snippet. At the back of my head I was wondering how I’d feel if it was me.

Overall I’m glad I read it, and I feel a bit more aware of my own problems and limitations – a common theme is that what seems obvious to the reader is oblivious to the patients – how might that be affecting me? And as a side note, this book is pushing me off the fence towards looking into therapy sessions for myself.

Some useful, practical advice. Nothing massively surprising – these is all fairly well-known advice, although it’s nice to have it with all the references. Even if you don’t follow the detailed regimes, there are small improvements to be had in many areas.

One thing I like is that it emphasises making healthy habits sustainable – it doesn’t just shame you for being unhealthy and push you straight to an extreme fitness regime, but talks about how to build it up slowly. Little and often.

A lot of advice in this book isn’t programmer-specific, and could apply to many office professions. Although it points to programmers as examples, and sometimes relates ideas to programming practices, it’s sufficiently generic that I could (and will) recommend it to non-programmers.

I picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend, but otherwise I knew nothing about it. Turns out that’s a really good way to read it.

I really enjoyed this book. I’d absolutely recommend it, doubly so if you can go in knowing nothing.

It has thoughtful, well-crafted aliens; a nuanced treatment of gender, pronouns and prejudice; and a crew who are likeable but not perfect. What was great was that I had no idea what was coming – in many ways, the book is like a breath of fresh air in a genre that’s still depressingly male and human-centric. I think this one will stick with me for a while.

This is a detailed account of Terry Nation’s work – from his upbringing in Wales, through to his BBC breakout shows and flight to Hollywood.

I enjoyed the factual content of the book. My only experience with Nation’s work is via the Daleks, and I never realised how much else he’d written. His writing output for other TV shows is prolific! And it helps that the author provides some description and context for his works – useful for somebody who’s barely heard of them, and who didn’t live through those political events.

The book focuses on his career, less so his personal life – in nearly 300 pages, his family is barely mentioned – and so it’s hard to get a sense for Terry Nation as a person. That was a bit disappointing.

Overall an interesting read about old British television and sci-fi, but not an absolute must-read for me.

I really wanted to like this book, but I found it hard-going.

Ostensibly this is a book about asexuality, but it spends an awful lot of time discussing allosexual behaviour, particularly gay men. It feels quite clinical and detached – more like an academic paper than a book.

The author seems keen to pin down and explain where asexuality comes from, trying to reduce it to a biological condition. Some of the conclusions are bizarre: I don’t see the connection the author draws between being asexual and gender non-conforming, or being left-handed (yes, that really is a connection that’s given several paragraphs of discussion).

There’s not much discussion of the social side: potential social causes of asexuality, or what it’s like being asexual. There’s a lot of stigma around being asexual – whether it’s a disorder, a result of childhood abuse, or like being a vegetable – and that’s barely addressed. No discussion of the

I get the sense that the author is allosexual (a word which, by the way, I’m pretty sure doesn’t appear in the book), and this reads like somebody writing about asexuals from a distance. “Maybe they feel this… maybe they feel that… perhaps an asexual might do the other thing.” Felt more like asexuals were the subject of a scientific experiment, rather than real living people.

I’d much rather read a book about asexuality by somebody who is asexual. There’s a good book to be written on the topic, but this isn’t it.

I very much enjoyed this book.

It’s a retelling of classic Norse myths, combining some tales, putting a new spin on others. Each myth is short – maybe 10–20 pages apiece – and aiming for the style of somebody sitting around a campfire. I don’t know how accurate it is to the originals (and as the preface discusses, does that matter?), but I felt myself gripped, and moving from story to story.

I got through it quite quickly (three days) – once I’d started a story, I wanted to see it through to the end – but I couldn’t read more than a couple at a time.

It’s short, but covers a lot of material in its pages:
* How inclusion and exclusion work
* Practical ways for improving inclusion (not just “try harder”), and acknowledging that it’s a process, not a single event

This is a pretty graphic book – reader beware, if descriptions of decomposing bodies and death rituals make you queasy, you might want to skip this.

But in a way, that’s at the heart of the book – Western culture tries to hide death, to cover it up and keep it being a pristine curtain. We’re scared to talk about what happens to people after they die. This book shows a bit of what happens in an (American) crematorium, with snippets of other death rituals from around the world.

I was recommended this book after I really enjoyed the funeral rites in Record of a Spaceborn Few, and it follows neatly. It was perhaps unwise to read it in just two sittings (some of that imagery is quite unsettling), but overall I found it interesting and easy to read.

In-depth account of British spying activities, starting in Vienna after WWII, all the way to the war in Iraq in the early 2000s.

This is a long book, with lots of detail, and it jumps around among many people. It’s primarily focused on overseas activities – Vienna, the Soviet Union, Iraq – not domestic intelligence. (The IRA are mentioned several times, but never in detail.)

Each chapter is a major piece of spy history, with accounts from the people involved. It tries to set the spying activities in context, discuss the political and external ramifications, and so on. It’s not an uncritical view of the service, and points out mistakes or missteps. The chapters are long, and worth reading in detail – it’s not for skimming.

I enjoyed it, and I learnt a lot about British spies that I didn’t know before. It’s also quite intense, long, and I’d only recommend it if you already know you’re interested in spying history. Probably not a great introduction to the subject, unless you’re a fast reader.

Mia’s account of growing up as a trans person who didn’t realise trans was a thing you could be, the sense of “not fitting in” with the other boys, and the slow and rocky road to transition. Life definitely improves for her, but it’s not without ups and downs, and I couldn’t read more than a few chapters at once (especially the beginning) without having to put it down – it’s quite sobering.

Interspersed is a discussion of being a trans woman, with plenty of reminders that she’s only one person and can only speak from her experience. I think it’d be a reasonable book to give a cis person who wants to learn more.

I related, er, rather strongly in parts to it, and got jealous of her in others. (Experimenting with feminine clothing at a much younger age, for example.) And it took me a while to get past the introduction (“if you’re wondering, you are trans enough”), which might be a sign.

I met Mia at a book signing event in 2018; my copy is inscribed to me.
