A detailed, methodical description of different nuclear accidents.

There’s enough context and background to understand why things go wrong, at least for me as a non-expert to follow. (For example, you want to maximise the surface-area-to-volume ratio of fuel. Keep it as a pancake, not a soup can—and when you have uranium and a soup can-shaped container in the same building, run away.) I didn’t feel lost by any of the explanations.

The author is clearly an expert and has done plenty of original research, and more speculative parts are marked.

A nuclear disaster sounds scary, but the book avoids sensationalism or hand-wringing. I’m less worried than I was before I’d started – bad things have happened, sure, but like any engineering discipline it gets better if we learn from past mistakes. This book describes plenty of past mistakes to learn from!

Good book, covers various aspects of water – chemical, physical, political – in lots of detail. There are plenty of diversions into related topics where helpful; water is just the framing.

I skimmed some of the later chapters and epilogue, which I might go back and finish at some point.

Lots of railways, interesting context and historical details, some nice photographs.

Probably not best read cover-to-cover (like I did!); 500 is a bit much to consume in one go. But gave me some ideas for railways I might want to visit, and the index is organised by country for easy skimming.

Christmas gift from Ed.

A series of questions answered in the most ludicrous, outlandish way possible. Typical levels of XKCD over-doing it and answering a problem in a ridiculous way. (How do we modify a piano to cover the full range of human/animal hearing, for example?)

Good for dipping into, and the longer chapters felt more satisfying than previous Randall Munroe books.

Each chapter is a snippet of one philosopher – a bit about their bio, how they practiced philosophy, something we can learn from them. It’s been on my shelf for ages and feels like something I should enjoy, but for whatever reason not grabbing me right now.

This book gives one theory for why humans can do maths. The central idea is that mathematical ability is an offshoot of language, and so a lot of the book is spent discussing linguistics and theories about the evolution of language. It was somewhat interesting, but not really what I was expecting.

There’s some material about the distinction about arithmetic and mathematics that I liked, but it was articulating a viewpoint I already hold. It’s hard for me to tell how much it would make sense to a non-mathematical reader.

This book was a bit of a slog to read, and I was heavily skimming by the end. Might be good if you want to know about how language developed, but I’m not sure how much you’ll learn about mathematics.

[Edit: insofar as my star ratings have any consistency, knocking off a star because this was a chore to finish. Not actively bad, but struggling to hold my attention.]
